Skin and Ear Infections: The Basics
As your trusted source for quality pet care, MVS Pet Care, treats a range of health problems found in pets, including skin and ear infections. These diseases are commonly found in our pets and often have a deeper underlying cause.
Itchy, crusty, smelly skin, its unpleasant to both owner and pet. This is one of the most common causes for a visit to the veterinarian. Skin infections can cause hair loss, itchiness, dry crusts, redness, swelling, scaling, pain, discomfort, and pustules. This disease process is usually due to an underlying condition like allergies, self-trauma, metabolic or immune system disorder, skin parasites, and poor nutrition. And unless the underlying disease process is addressed the skin infection will not fully resolve. Therefore, it is important to work with your veterinarian to rule out each cause for your pet.
This can involve tests for skin parasites, cultures for bacteria or fungal causes, allergy testing, and diet trials. Working together in a stepwise process can see your pet comfortable and the disease resolved or controlled with medication.
Ear infections in pets are often caused by an underlying factor. For example, your pet can get an ear infection if it suffers from allergies, water in the canal, or a polyp or mass. The most common signs and symptoms of an ear infection are excessive scratching of the ear, head shaking, an odor or discharge coming out of the ear, and ear pain. A physical exam and additional testing can determine whether your pet has an ear infection and the severity. Depending on the severity there are different topical treatments available. It is important to ensure the ear drum is intact before initiating any treatment, this is done with the exam. Your vet will discuss the best methods for cleaning and treating the ears tailored to your pet.
